I don't part with spares when I only have a single, but I will put it on the scanner alongside a ruler sometime today so you can see what it's like and the rough dimensions. It wouldn't be easy to make as a one-piece steel stamping, but it would be easy enough to turn one on a lathe, or even fabricate from sheet steel in a few pieces and weld. But if it truly was the same part# thru the early postwar years, I'd bet you'll find one available somewhere.

Just checked the online store of Max Merritt and they are $25 for a '34 model.

I wouldn't want to make one for that kind of money! Glad it's so easily obtainable, I won't bother with the part scan and dimensions.
And as I suspected, it's a 33-39 senior Eight and Super Eight part only according to Max, so there are apparently some differences between it and what others thought might be the same part up thru 1950.

thanks all for this info. I can now put this unit back together, at present the bimetallic spring is clean and not corroded but flaps about without connection at either end. Your explanations make its purpose and operation clear. Thank you.
