I have none of your skills as a real mechanic, but as an inveterate wrench-bender I have found that the worst gremlins in the shop are rags, or in your case, a towel. Looking through a stack of old greasy rags and waste paper can produce surprising results when looking for parts--old and new--tools, etc. But be careful. Starting to sling stuff around in disgust can result in all those little precious pieces flying around the shop and rattling away all over the place (insert scream here). I once threw out a new fuel pump that was in a pile of rags and "junk." Bought another one before my Dad suggested I look in the trash barrel (He had set out a new pump for me and I'd piled all the crap on top of it, after which I "cleaned up.") Also, NEVER dump your trash barrel until the job is done. If it gets full, start filling another one. You may need to go prospecting again.

made my own way to take apart things without having the Packard tools. that was fun, i like problem solving.

Max sent wrong end plate for driveshaft....but they are sending correct one and it is here already as of this edit.

trying to get that pin out was a HUGE PITA!!! you ahve NO idea!

driveshaft done. found out that the lock nuts go on the bolt side, not nut side via stb....i wondered about that cause it looked weird, but that was the way i took it off, so it was wrong at some point in its life.

piston lip seal was hard as a brick. new one is much better.

one of the pins for the gear set was all jacked up....probably why my ring gear was messed up too. so i stole one from the other trans and cleaned it as good as i could. actually the old trans has helped out quite a bit with this new one. LOL! thank goodness for spare parts.

made my own piece that goes on the rear u-joint out of a hose clamp i had laying around. cut it, split it and then ground it down to fit perfect and bent the ends to fit. perfect!

cleaned a bunch of parts up really good too.

enjoy the pics it took forever to load them up.

painted the frame number back on the car. it was time consuming and it isn't perfect, but it will do.

step by step of the tailshaft. i know your probably not supposed to use grease on the tailshaft bearing, but i put just enough to get into the bearing itself, i didn't pack it, so it should be fine.

you will notice i put in the retaining ring the wrong way the first time, but i went back and corrected it.

this was an easy put together.

i will post more step by steps in their own posts.

Rims and tires mounted.

so....are they painted or are they powder coated?? whatca think?

they look really good i think. and i took them to my cousin's shop and mounted them up. 18 bucks, cause his nice and i helped him.

we had to wrap tie downs around the tire to squish them so they would bead. since they have been sitting so long, they had gotten flat on the rim of the tire. but it worked and they look great and they hold air and we're good to go.

anyone want to tell me the torque specs for the lug bolts, if you know off the top of your head.

Hank, I really do enjoy following your progress, you're to be commended for top-notch work and the willingness to tackle anything. Keep it going.

I've only ever had to change two pins on ball & trunnion joints, both times had them pressed out by a local shop with a 20-ton hydraulic press though I don't recall how much pressure was actually required.

Henry, great progress. What brand and size of tire did you use? They look fantastic. How is it looking for Salado? I know my 47 Custom Clipper will not make it this year. Stuck taking the 37 Six Convertible Coupe, again. I should complain. Hope to see you there.

Henry, looking at the photos your ball & trunnion joint I am reminded of a distant memory that says not to pack too much grease into the housing. If too much is packed-in, rotation will force it into the rubber boot area and "explode" a hole in the boot. Maybe someone here with more recent experience (i.e., less than 50 years ago) can chime in and confirm or deny my recollection. Also, I wonder why Packard did not use a conventional U-joint for their Ultamatic equipped cars? I think Chrysler Corp. used this same kind of joint on their cars too.

Thanks dude, feed back keeps me going ;0) especially the good kind.

you don't want to know what i had to do to get the pin out. i had to use a 2 foot cheater bar on top of the 1 foot that was on the arbor. then once i go it half way out that wouldn't work anymore, so i took my 3 pound sledge to the top of the arbor pin.....that work great....aim.....and slam really hard. just make sure you support the drive shaft right cause you don't want to bend things up. it was even harder putting it back in....had to get really really creative. working alone doesn't help either.

Coker Classics....bias plys.....3" whitewall....7.60x15...got them off ebay for 400 bucks shipped or so. can't remember, but that's like 50% off of new prices. and these were still wrapped ;0) you can see some of the blue on them still and the wax covering is still on there. you can scrap it off with your fingernail. so they are good to go.

looking good for salado, i should have the transmission done, sans the torque converter, and in the car.

i plan to try to support the trans from the front with some chain or something, i want people to see what it looks like sitting in the car. if not, i wont bring it. i will just bring the frame again. there have still been some changes since last year.

yeah you should complain.....those are both cars i want to own.....as you can tell by my sig....my grandfather had one from each year. and that 37....i wanna sit in it this time...;0) PLLLLEEAAASSEE!!! maybe if i am a good boy....a ride ;0)....PLLLEEAAASSSEEE!!!

right you are......but looks are deceiving.....heheheheh....

i have one finger load under each side and then i smeared it flush across the top. didn't pack as much as it looks like in the picture. i read that part you are remembering and took precautions not to over pack.

i think it is funny when i mention trunion to some of the car nuts at work..and they are are like....wtf is that...LOL!!!! i have to show them in the pics. HAH!

don't even mention it to autozone.....LOL!!
