The Cole-Hersee rotary switches are extremely robust and reliable and the recommended way to go even though installation requires a bit of forethought as to location and an extra cable.

Here's my solution to the problem of disconnecting the battery when the car is going to sit for an extended period.
It's very inexpensive (you might even already have one). It works on 6 or 12 Volt. It takes about 10 seconds longer than the aforementioned switches. It eliminates the possibility of an unwanted short (assuming you apply it to the ground). It does not require drilling any holes in your pristine, factory-original firewall or inner fender.
