thanks again, but that group number you are pointing out is in reference to the part in the pictures attached. i have that part....this piece i am questioning is in addition to that part and is not listed in the parts diagram.
i really can't find any literature on that bushing needing to be there for any purpose. i believe you as to its purpose because it fits nicely when put together, but can't find anything from Packard about it. Hank

Maybe it's originally part of the shaft assembly and not serviced separately?

Thanks BH!!!! Looking at my old rusty crap converter..... It too has this predrilled piece and along with that it has that same bushing that we can't seem to find in any literature. So it is probably all as one unit, but I can tell that bushing will come out. I think a good removal and measuring to find a new one is in order. I do anticipate what Ross will say though.
Thanks again!! Hank

Sorry. I wasn't paying attention! Yes the bushing should be there as it pilots the reactor shaft and also keeps the direct clutch pressure from just running into the convertor rather than being directed on its convoluted path to the piston. Packard probably did not service it separately, but every Kanter kit comes with one as it is rather important for successful direct engagement.
Don't know why you have the extra o-rings. The only o-rings in the unit are on the jumper tubes back by the rear pump. Maybe its the same reason that every Best Gasket straight eight set has a thin cork ring (not the front seal) included. I have never seen a place for it on an engine.

WAKE UP Ross!! LOL! j/k! thanks for confirming bro!
i have emailed Max about those two o-rings....because i know i put one on every place it called for one when i was rebuilding the transmission. i'll email Max about why kanter has that bushing and their kit doesn't seem to have it. lets see what they say, i'll report on it. if they don't have it, i'll call Kanter as they have the right one in stock and i don't have to go hunting it down. thanks, Hank

Ross, is that extra round straight eight gasket in the Best kit, perhaps the distributor to block gasket?

okay, Max has them, says it is part number 421376 and they want 25 bucks for it. i'm not ready to drop 25 bucks on small piece like that just yet.
apparently it was not servicable seperately back in the Pacakrd days. But JD at MAX says he has it hand written in the part book as that part number above. where would one find bushings on the net or locally? i would like to see if i can match it up to something locally first, maybe that will be cheaper. If Kanter includes this bushing in there rebuild kits, then i think MAX should to....imho. i'll call Kanter too and find out the price they have. Maybe Packards1 from ebay has it, he has a lot of ultramatic parts on there right now. more to come. Hank

okay, i have a little bit of concern with this torque converter. i got the new bushing from Max and installed it in the shaft. it went in fine. the problem is putting the converter pump housing on top to mate the two halves. it did not want to go on at all. i have to use a brass drift and hammer it down till i could get it the rest of the way with 4 bolts to tighten it up. i absolutely cannot turn the inside shaft. it is impossible, 100% impossible by hand.
i put the torque converter on the transmission and that was a PITA too. had to go easy and rubber hammer it on. it finally seated in.....but i WILL NOT turn. i can turn the tail shaft, but i cannot turn the torque converter. i had to use bailing wire hooked to the TC to yank it off too. it was really on there. it was easier to put on and off the more i did it though. so, i don't know what is wrong with it or if it is just supposed to be that tight, but i remember being able to turn the inside shaft by hand in both directions before. so what did i do wrong? i'm confused. i put that bushing in the exact same place as the old one too. so i have no idea what is wrong if anything. i also followed Kev's lead and bought one of those nuts and bolts tumble/vibrators. they work great!! also before i put the converter pump housing on, the inside shaft i could turn by hand in both direction and the turbine it was hooked too would turn too....isn't it supposed to lock in one direction and not the other? seem to me the repair manual is very vague on the TQ stuff. idk maybe its just me.
