It will be interesting to see if any of this site's regulars have that kind of knowledge or info on the very early Packards. It's not often we get queries here on anything that wonderful! Love to see a picture!

Almost certainly the best person to contact for information like this would be Terry Martin at the Packard Museum in Warren. He has a very long and very involved history in the earliest of Packards, "wrote the book" on them (*), drove one cross-country, and is almost certainly the recognized expert.

Another possibility would be John Hovey in New Jersey who was recently having new wheels made (or was it old ones respoked?) for his 1901 Model C.

Another would be Howard Schaevitz, also in NJ though I believe his oldest is a 1902 Model F.

Contact info for these folks in either the PAC or AACA membership directories.

I have no specific knowledge of a Packard wire wheel.
Typical wire wheel details involve a possibility of as many as 3 different spoke lengths.

IMPORTANT is to measure the hub offset to rim so that when it is relaced the hub will not be too close or too far from axle.

Need to measure the offset and record it regardless of WHO does the relace and trueing of the wheel.

KEEP ONE known good WHEEL as a pattern or model to compare the newly laced wheel to. OTherwise if there are problems then u're SOL for what is correct and not correct.

G'day Paul,
Like to echo O_D's to PackardInfo. With a Packard of that age, as O_D mentioned, "experts" are pretty thin on the ground. Would also like to see pic's of your piece of Packard motoring history.

Paul,

For a 1901 Model C, it looks like 40 on the front, and 60 on the back if my count is correct.

Regards,

Dave

More spokes in the rear (drive) wheels also very common thru the early use of wooden spokes.
