Is there a difference between an oil pan for a 288 versus a 327? Half inch longer stroke has rods tapping bottom of oil pan that came with a project car 1954 Patrician with 327 engine. If it's a 54 Patrician, original engine would be a 359 not a 327. That one may have had the original aluminum head replaced with a cast iron head which could have 327 cast into it. Motor number will tell exactly which engine. If it starts M6xxxxx, it's a 359; M2xxxxx=288, M3 or M4xxxxx=327. Any other letter means different year or engine than original.

Pan (426171) was the same for 288 and 327's from 48-53 (D & E suffix introduced 22nd series denotes larger capacity) but in 54 they did change pans across the line so maybe a deeper one was provided for the large engine and just used on all.

to PackardInfo. Looks like you've received the definitive answer from Howard, as always. However could it just be that the pan is dented and needs a little TLC, or a big hammer, to get it back to the proper depth?

I have a 288 that has been transformed into a 327 with rods, crank and cam out of a 327 (5 main bearing version). When I started it up, the rods were hitting the pan. Seems as if the pan on the 51-54 Packards can hit the cross member and steering linkage when hitting big dips, or maybe when the motor mounts are tired. A little bit of time with a rubber hammer cured the problem - it was just barely scraping the bottom. I think the pans were originally the same.
