The following filters cross-reference to Gravely 12722, or to FRAM PH8A and PH43.
Filters labeled "shorter" are known to be equivalent to the shorter FRAM PH43, but
others listed may also be shorter than the FRAM PH8A.

This guy bought as many filters as possible and carefully dismantled them to assess quality. Makes interesting reading especially the Fram PH43 which was reported as very badly constructed.


Sorry for the expletive earlier. I appreciate all help and advice but its easy to forget that I am 4000 miles away from the nearest US motor parts shop and 75% of the brands you mention mean nothing to me here and are not available

The simple answer is to ditch the Packard and buy a Rolls Royce but quite frankly, I don't want to do that so I will struggle on!

Why not toddle down to the local motor factors and request a filter for a Rover V8?

Whilst you are there, pick up a firkin of Duckham's and bob's your uncle.

Incidentally Motorcraft, Wix and Hastings are all good filters but Amsoil, Mobil 1 and K&N are better, at a premium price.

For a permanent solution to the oil filter problem may I recommend the Frantz oil filter? It keeps your oil cleaner than any other filter and it never needs to be replaced. The filter itself lasts the life of the car, all you need to do is replace the filter element and that is a simple bog roll.

It may sound crazy but they have been in use for over 50 years and those who have used them, swear by them.

I certainly cannot refute the post from the former Fram employee. Reviewing the internet again under "Fram failures" instead of "Fram problems" I find many entries. There was a recall by Fram in about 2007 on two part numbers of RACING FILTERS. These would not be used in regular passenger cars.(revision, yes they would)


The problem was not with the filter itself, but with the rubber gasket which deformed and caused a leak.


Much of what is on the internet is third/fourth/fifth hand. Someone knows someone who knows someone who thinks he heard of a problem.

There are several posts from JiffyLube type shop owners who have installed 40,000 Fram oil filters without a failure or problem.

The filter recommended just above, the Frantz filter,that uses a roll of toilet paper would not look original on a Packard and I doubt its filtration qualities are up to spec for our needs. It is mostly a novelty in that it saves money

As the Packard filter in the '30 conversion is fully enclosed in an outer casing with its own separate casing gasket,I would not hesitate to use it on my '30.

REVISION- FRAM "RACING FILTERS" ARE JUST A TRADE NAME, THEY ARE NOT USED SPECIFICALLY FOR RACING.
