and i hope it doesn't grow any larger either!!!

okay, speaking to this rear main seal in neoprene....bs40613....any pics of this installed with that "coat hanger" spacer. this is obviously a thinner seal then the rope seal and i'm not so sure i like that. i know the rope seal is old technology, but i also don't really want to have to ever remove this motor again.

just wondered what those that have done this have done, although i see the x-ref notes. did you use any of that anaerobic sealent like it talks about on the packaging from felpro?

thanks,

Hank

well i guess i'm just going to move on....and just assume that everyone uses the rope seal.

here just look at these pictures...those clips fell out of the screen.

looks like the drive pin for the vacuum portion sheered off at some point in its life. good thing i don't need this one. i'm just learning from it how it works and wuold like to salvage any parts i can from it to use later if i need to.

i took the staked pin out, but i can't seem to figure out how the shafts seperate. i know that the gear presses on, but i can't seem to seperate the long shaft at the joint where that pin is.

I can't say that I enjoyed doing it with the engine in the car, especially the upper half - but I've installed a pretty good number of the graphited rope rear main seals over the years with no problems - properly installed they'll last as long as an engine rebuild. Less experience with the rope front seal on the V8s, but again no problems.

Henry,

That scoring and pitting on the oil pump face plate (pic 2712) can cause a significant oil pressure drop, which is often attributed to bad bearing, foaming oil, and whatnot. It is a gremlin that is not frequently suspected, and can be a bit cheaper fix than replacing pumps and bearings!

got the std bearings in yesterday from Jack. they worked way better. torqued everything down and it turns fine now.

i just took a few pics of the install of the crank and of the new rebuilt pump vs. the rest of my old oil pump.

i can't tell if that crack in the gear is from my pressing it out (probably) or just from wear. you can see the sheared off pin for the vacuum pump as well.

then i put it all to bed for the night under cap. ;0)

started taking apart the power steering pump tonight so it didn't try seazing up on me.

one thing i noticed in the parts exploded view was this little spacer thing that is supposed to be after that big spring, but mine didn't have one that i could see and i nothing fell out, so i'm confused there.

i'm also not to sure about that shaft having those grooves in it, but that is where the locked in place inner rotor goes, so i'm not sure it really will matter much.

the outer rotor sits inside of a big "bushing" too, which i don't really see as a replacable part on the venders sites. also don't see the other two shaft bushings listed either.

here is the first website i came across that has a interchange for the Federal 1203RR bearing.

http://www.mrosos.net/servlet/the-919/6203DD-6203-dsh-2RS-203NN-203PP/Detail

and another for half that price.

http://www.mrosos.net/servlet/the-898/6203-dsh-2RS-Z99503-6203DD-203PP/Detail

or get it with the original type metal seals on the ends.

http://bearingsdirect.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=210

i had to stop there cause i'm having some really bad allergies tonight. blugh!

a clarification on the part i suggested i was missing. the part that goes in before the spring....group 15.844 (474138). parts manual says that is only for monroe power steering, wonder why?

I am also missing the o-ring 15.816 (436430) for the pump body. i guess the years of dirt and grease where holding it from leaking all over then.

Monroe units required approx 100psi higher output pressure than Bendix. The flow control valve spring is the same on both units so it appears they used a combination of the spacer depth and orifice to raise the pressure. Monroe pumps have a number 900 stamped on the output port to tell them apart.
