I have only seen this tag on some 1956 Packard Caribbeans. Is there any factory information on this? How would the buyer know it was available? IF I remember correctly they don't always have Studebaker-Packard Corporation. Any data how many 56 Caribbeans were "made specially for" a buyer?

I've always been under the impression, right or wrong, that they were made available to the selling dealer for installation on every 56 Caribbean sold. Perhaps in some cases the buyer didn't want it or the dealer didn't follow thru, I've seen very few 56 Caribbeans that don't have it.

With some of the cars that are missing them, perhaps it was removed by the next owner in the custody chain.

What do you all think is up with the spot weld marks on the VIN tag? I've not seen that before.

Perhaps it was removed when the car was repainted and rewelded back into place.
The locations match the spots where it would have been on mine as well.

As I recall when mine was removed and examined, the tag was spot welded on and the two holes were empty. The welds are very small, discreet and even with and just outside the holes. When the body shop put it back on, they put rivets in the holes. Original spot welds are still visible and not black at all. That one sure does not look factory & I'd wonder if DMV might question it.
I see the auction has ended and 49k and change did not make reserve. Are prices going up again or is the reserve wishful thinking?

My two cents' worth is that the reserve was more wishful thinking than prices rising that much. There was a '56 Caribbean located in Maine on eBay about a week ago that ended at $60,000.00 and the reserve on that car was not reached. I doubt if any seller of the later series cars is going to see that kind of price in this economy.

The vin tag on my 400 is welded just like that Carib and so is the Pat. Can't see the Carib right now.

Thanks for the reply, I will have to look at the PAC & PI magazines for the article. Do you remember how long ago it was?
OK, How about these 2? autotraderclassics.com/classic-car/1956-Packard-Caribbean-536236.xhtml autotraderclassics.com/classic-car/1956-Packard-Caribbean-536301.xhtml neither one has the tag on the glove box. Did they come with a tag, or???? I am not 100% familiar with 56 Caribbeans, but for those prices, it looks like they were not restored correctly. EDIT; and this one TOO, has no tag cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370543451949
