I've been using aproduct called Free All for the last few months and just have to share this amazing product. It puts WD-40, PB Blaster, and Liquid Wrench to shame. In all the years of working on rusty crusty iron, I have never seen anything that breaks things loose like this does. It's a little pricey, but once you try it, you'll never go back.

BTW, I have no affiliation with the manufacturer or any suppliers. I've just broke, rounded, and torched to many bolts in the past not to share my experience with it.

I have been using Kroil "the oil that creeps" for years with good sucess. I've also had lots of sucess using PB Blaster by spraying it on the offending part, then hitting it with a blast of compressed air at about 100 psi. I used this tactic on a 40 Ford rear axle bracket a friend had been working on for several days with no sucess and it came right off. Course Ford rust better than Packards.....

Same here David, they have a relatively new product called "Sili-Kroil" that I ordered online when they were offering it 2 for 1 and it's performed better than anything I've ever used.

Phil said, "Some friends of mine swear by a mixture of 50/50 acetone and auto tranny fluid"

My brother swears by the home brew of 50/50 ATF-Acetone too. I didn't think much about it until heard about an article in the September issue of "Turning Wheels" of the Willys Overland Knight Registry. This same article was also mentioned by Gerald Pershbacher in the February 16 edition of "Old Cars Weekly" under "Club Clips."

Anyway, Machinist Workshop Magazine tested several penetrating oils and found the homebrew to be the best. Results are below:

Penetrating oil Average load Price per fluid ounce
None ...............516 pounds
WD-40 ..............238 pounds $0.25
PB Blaster .........214 pounds $0.35
Liquid Wrench ......127 pounds $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. .. 53 pounds $0.10

Now I believe my brother.

It's interesting that folks often throw WD-40 into discussions of penetrating oil. It's nothing of the kind, just a water-dispersant.

I've use Kroil and PB Blaster for a long time with good success, but will give the acetone/ATF a try next time I enounter a need.

I got the March issue of Auto Restorer today. The article on the back page recommended a 50/50 mix of paint thiner (mineral spirits) and ATF for freeing up rusted parts. They also tested a product called Metal Rescue for removing rust and paint.
