The great thing about America is no matter how bad things deteriorate everybody denies it.

I think you could serve dog food at the Waldorf and if it cost fifty bucks a plate people would buy it.

When I lived in Dayton they had a fantastic engineering library in storage. It was last used when the city was an engineering and manufacturing metropolis. Nobody ever realized just what that meant. They just said storing it was a waste of money.

Interesting article, but the title is misleading. The DIA and the historical museum are completely separate entities in terms of management and funding. Both are long past the days of getting any sizable portion of their operating budget from the city, and have broken off to be more self sustaining, outside the influences of city politics.
As in any of these things there are powerful people (read: wealthy)who look out for the well being of each institution, and the money that could be raised by selling Rembrants or Packards could reach record values, but that money would be miniscule in terms of city debt and annual budgets. There has been talk of selling off the Historical Museum's car collection for years, no action.
