All 356 engines are 9 main. Not all 9 main engines are 356's. I believe Eric was looking for a 327 or 359 9 main, can't remember which.

You are correct on both fronts. I didn't want a 356 because of the overly-long (IMHO) stroke. I was looking for a 327 or 359, or both. I'm building a "hot rod" engine, and the 356 doesn't fit my requirements.

I had a man inquire about it who was from Kansas and I checked with a local trucking company and they quoted me around $450 to truck it to Kansas.

Could you check the numbers on the engine you believe is for a '48 and get back with me? I haven't heard back yet from Al on whether his numbers show his '40 is for a 120 or a 160/180. I'm more than a little confused now, did the 1940 120 have a 356 9 main bearing engine? The packard club website says the engine serials were way different between the 120 and 160/180, which would seem to imply different engine. Thanks guys for the help on this.

In 40 the 120 used the 282ci engine. It was 5 main bearing. Basically the same engine introduced in 35 and later the 288ci. The Supers all used the new 356ci engine. It remained virtually the same through 50.
The serial numbers for the 282 were C3xxxxx while the 356 was C5xxxxxx.

With some luck I should be able to check the numbers on the 356 I have tomorrow.I'll let you know as soon as I can.

The engine I have is indeed a 48/49. its number is G608286. It has a casting date of 7-1-48. I have not had it apart so I'm not sure how much reworking will be required.

Let me know if I can help.

Still haven't heard back from Al on what his engine number is, maybe it isn't a 356. Is yours a 356, and if so, do you know what problem caused it to be pulled? Would hate to buy another cracked block. Any idea if it was ever bored or sleeved?

Thanks for the help.

Walt

As I said, I haven't had it apart yet. I will take it apart and magnaflux it to see if there are any cracks. I will also determine cylinder taper and if it has been sleeved.
I will be glad to rebuild it here in my shop for you if you like. I build engines for Packards from the 30s through 54.

If we had you rebuild the motor, what would your turn-around time be? We're beached until we can get the motor rebuilt and back in the car. Thanks for your help.

Walt'
I just saw the response from AL. If his is indeed a '40 356 I would take his. It's better, in my opinion, to stay with the correct. engine numbers and casting dates.

However, if you decide to take my engine. It would probably take about two weeks for me to rebuild it, depending on what needs to be done.

Phone me at 573-651-7458 if you want to discuss it further.

Good luck, I hope Al's engine is what you need.
