Outstanding. And I looked at my engine pix pre-teardown and the slot is facing forward on the oil filler cap. Thanks!

Good Evening all...
To my old ears, I think that I would also remove the valve train covers and check the valve lash. I have listened to Packard engines that are lose and inconsistently gapped and the sound like this fellow sounds. Sort of like a cement mixer. Ernie

Ah, ok. another thing to look at.
We have eliminated the exhaust leak idea, so far. So, one good thing. It sounds an awful lot like a lifter to us in person, but I'll check the valve lashes. It's such a tricky thing, because I know the phone recording is a bit worse than the engine actually sounded. We're so used to 6's and V8's so I'm sure we're off on what things sound like.
