Here comes a real improvement. The "Motor Dictograph" made by the General Acoustic Company in New York replaced the speaking trumpet to save the vocal cords of the owners. The author annotated that the below shown "transmission plate" has to be covered with upholstery material, if the car in question is a Packard. One switch operates an electric buzzer to alert the driver and another push button opens the line as long as hold down.

Today we -> meet again an old old acquaintance, the armored car of Zhang Zuolin, a former warlord of Manchuria. And penetrate a mystery in passing. The lateral leather belts are intended to hold the security guards to enable offhand shooting.
The sunroof is made of iron and ball bearing mounted iron blinds are pulled up into the roof. The wall-mounted intercom is clearly visible. source AUTOMOBILZEITUNG Oct 23, 1921 Click to enlarge!

Below semi-annual sales figures, which illustrate the Great Depression.
Auburn looks as forming an exception but other sources report that they lost 32% from 1929 to 1930. Nevertheless the 1930 Auburn 125 was a huge success and one of the few to buck the trend. sources #023 - AUTOMOBILZEITUNG Oct 01, 1931 #024 - ebay UK; item number 381532191410 Click to enlarge!

Methinks that warlord would have been better off taking his armored car instead of the train on his last trip. If the steel didn't protect him well enough surely the bodyguards fastened to the car with nowhere to hide and no way to take cover would have given their all in the line of duty. I don't know if they had much in the way of bulletproof body armor then but I guess he would get some kind of added cover behind their strapped on bodies.

It reports about the technological progressiveness of PMCC. Special-purposes machines, an elaborated production process and high performance oil are neccessary to realize an axle drive with hypoid gears and to master the high pressure. The newspaper praised the noiseless running of the two inches lower cardan shaft and mentioned the pioneering role of Packard. source AUTOMOBILZEITUNG May 01, 1937 Click to enlarge!

Automotive news must have traveled slowly to some quarters, Packard introduced their hypoid-geared rear axle, trade-named Angleset, in 1932.
