Thank you all for the input. As soon as I am able to get back to the shop I will heed your advice.

Since there were a couple of different suggestions, I thought I would try each to see if I have better results of one over another. I'm intrigued with the wax.............

The "wax method" may go back to as early as the days of the Industrial Revolution and it sometimes produces very rewarding results. Always worth a try.

Maybe a hand impact? I have an impact driver that has different bits that come with it. You hold the impact and strike with a hammer and it rotates maybe an 1/8 of a turn.

I had thought of that too but it would need to be used carefully to avoid cracking the casting, They work very well, though.

Thanks again, for all the suggestions and input......

Using the various methods suggested, I was able to remove all of the pipe plugs feeding the cam bearings. First of all, I soaked the plugs with PB Blaster for about a week. Secondly, I used a Mapp torch on each one. The final approach was to use an impact screwdriver. The plugs were soft and fortunately broke loose before the slots were completely deformed.
BTW, I tried the wax suggestion and it performed as well as the ones with the PB Blaster.

Unfortunately, The two main plugs in the ends of the oil gallery will have to be drilled out. They have a 3/8" female square that is very shallow. I'm not sure how the factory planned on removing these, but they are only about 1/8" deep. I'm not aware of any tool that will remove these.

If the square recess is a standard 3/8 size would a length of square stock from the hardware store work if you cut off a piece and used it with a 4 point or 8 point socket? Not sure if a 12 point socket would work on square stock but maybe. If no bar stock is available at the local hardware store McMaster has a good selection of short inexpensive lengths in alloy steel as well as 4 and 8 point sockets.

Great to hear you got those out.

If I remember correctly the business end of the standard impact screwdriver is 3/8" square, but it might have the end rounded a bit so maybe it wouldn't sit deep enough in the recess. However, one of these might, again attached to the 3/8" impact screwdriver. Might be able to find one of these or similar at your local hardware store or order online.

I have drilled and tapped plugs with a left hand threaded tap then screwed in a left hand threaded bolt which allows you to put a socket on it to remove the plug.

Finally able to remove ALL oil galley plugs. The plugs with the shallow square had to be drilled out. I carried the block to my buddy's machine shop and we were able to remove them.
He stated they were the toughest to remove in his 25 years!

While in his possession, I had him check the piston clearance as the block had been bored .030 over. I'm also waiting on the main bearing clearances as we are using the original crank with the new block.

After next week, I'll be able to start the rebuild.
