With the Olds pump seeming to solve most of the oiling issues am curious if the different Hash and Stude pump versions had cast bodies similar to Packards with the un-bushed shaft that some feel is behind the intermittent pump issues. It seems to have been proven that the theory of a swelling plate separating the vacuum section from the oil pump was not the issue so any idea if there is any Packard like lifter problems reported with those other engines?

I have wondered about that in the past. Last year I talked to a guy briefly with a 55 V8 Hudson and mentioned the oil pump issue, and advised him to check it out. Meanwhile his 90k mile car with the original engine was purring along at idle (it was the end of the show and he was about to leave).

So I don't know, but if the pump is such where the upper bushing is done the same way, wouldn't we expect the same problem?

And therein lies one of the mysteries. Why do some with high mileage engines never seem to have had a problem but with the various "fixes" S-P tried with oil pump designs and the field mod of the added relief valve dump to sump tube, it must have been reported others had issues apparently starting shortly after leaving the factory.

A brake puller with clamps? Looks doable. Thanks.

Anyway, does anyone know the actual part number of the valve retainers that need to be replaced?

I don't have part numbers, but it's easy to determine manually.

With a sharp file, try to cut the edge of a retainer. The early soft retainers, the file will cut easily. The later hardened retainers, the file will skate on the edge without cutting it.

The third generation can be recognized by the black rubber collar molded to the inner diameter.

Thanks, I just mean more like what part are you referring to by a retainer? Packard calls it a valve spring key and valve spring seat. Sorry I'm just not familiar.

Edit: I called Max Merritt and they are 5.1708. $80 per engine.

Ok, so what they are doing is using AutoZone's Tool Loan Program to borrow their damper puller and installer. Then just attaching it with C-clamps and threading against the inside of the pulley. Not sure what exactly the screw is resting against but you could probably just use some washers or something.

The puller screw has to rest against the end of the crankshaft. The factory puller has a conical end which goes in the bolt hole and self centers. If you use washers, just make sure they aren't too big.

Oh, right, thanks. I just hope the tapered end wouldn't damage anything.

Buy a longer- 3/4.-14? Bolt. I think I use one 3 inches long.

For crank bolt. That gives you plenty of pull to get it off.

Also. I have had no problems pulling on back of ring that's vulcanized on the cast pulley.
