FWIW, the later AFB/Edelbrocks use a larger diameter airhorn than the WCFB/early AFB, so the OEM Packard air cleaners will not fit the later carbs.

There's a multitude of air horn adapters in the hot rod world but you must always check for proper choke operation and hood clearance when installing them.

You could always do something like this:
Or the air horn adapter idea. That will raise the air cleaner approx. 1". The spacing is the same, the only problem is the diameter of the air horn. The only problem I've ever had with the Edelbrock carbs fitting was the throttle linkage on the carb hitting the heat crossover on the intake. This is solved with a 1/2" spacer. The carb works great, and I like the fact that it's brand new, and available in electric choke.

Gotta luv them electric chokers. Those crests atop the air cleanerators is a nice touch.

That's not my engine, it belongs to Paul out in Las Vegas, and the pic was shamelessly stolen from Craig's '56 Panther site.

Eric,
I've decided to replace the Rochester on my 374 with an Edelbrock carb. After four different Rochesters and multiple re-builds by multiple experts, I just want a trouble-free carb that works. Can you recommend a size/model of Edelbrock carb? I was thinking a 1406 rated at 600 cfm might work.

It will work just fine, but you'll have to buy a 1/2" spacer to lift it up high enough to get the throttle arm to clear the heat crossover on the manifold.(as well as the secondary butterflies, they're larger than the holes in the manifold on the 600 cfm version, the 500 has the correct size) I put a 600 on my supercharged 320 and had no issues using the spacer. IIRC, the stock air cleaner won't fit on the Edelbrock, so I used an aftermarket 14" air cleaner with the stock Packard top cover on it, no one could tell the difference.
