the plug that is in there now isn't NPT....just a brass hex head bolt with a gasket for sealing.

i think i'll go with NPT and just guess on the size. then i wont have to worry about a gasket. they have these stuff at the autostore, just not sure about the size i would need for a 5/16 hole....not much is sized in 5/16 in the NPT world...plus its based on the opening for the tube not the thread size. confusing as heck for me.

i usually just buy a bunch and whatever fits i keep and take back the rest. lol!

It appears to be 5/16-24 with a wide machined surface for the sealing washer and has a 1/2" hex. It may be special to the Carter pumps and will have to come from an old non-rebuildable unit. Didn't see a brass pipe fitting that small a thread or with that wide a sealing surface but didn't do much of a search either.

correct on the measurements...same as i got. my hex is just galled up, not that i plan on having to take it apart often.

maybe i'll just have to find a seal for it. i'll have a look locally at the plugs they have. maybe they have something small enough. idk.

would be nice to replace it with a draincock so you would never have to take it out to drain gas.

got the parts in for the fuel line. 5/16 braided line, cut to size and fitted.

mounted the generator temporarily, was looking for a new jam nut for the pully, but the size is between 5/8 and 3/4 and nobody carries that odd size locally. thanks alot delco remy.....jerks. just gonna clean up the old one and clear coat paint it, or maybe black. idk.

i'm also rebuilding the alternator on my z3 at this time. headlights flicker during idle and brighten during reving.

Hank

Hank, you should be able to get a nut to secure the generator pulley and fan at your local alternator and starter shop. It may be available at a parts store too. The nut was used for many years on generators and maybe even some alternators. Someone here might be able throw one your way from their parts stash. Do you have the lock washer on do you need one of those too? Sorry, I do not have any extras.

There is some debate about whether the slotted part of the adjustment strap goes on the engine or generator side. Maybe it depends on whether the generator is a Delco or Auto Lite. I mounted my slot on the generator side.

Nice seeing you and your family at Salado; albeit, for only a brief period of time.

i have the nut and lock washer...i wanted new ones that are bright and shiny. i'll probably just clean up the original and paint it.

I like the slot on the generator side and don't really care what someone else thinks. ;0) its not their car.

yeah we didn't stay long. just to see the cars. good to see you too buddy.

IIRC there was a discussion on the slot. 55s started out on the generator side and most photos show it that way. Sometime in 55 production and then thru 56 it went to the engine side. Reason given is the excess length is very close to the air duct. Even tho there is a depression for it, if the engine rocked it could hit the fender. By moving the excess length to the engine side the end of bar stopped at generator ear and problem was solved.

Just wanted to say THANKS to everyone that has helped me get to this point! these few seconds of noise was enough to get my heart racing!! I could watch this video 100000000 times and i'd still smile wide.

I didn't want to run it long as its not really ready, but it had been sitting without a rotation for a few months so I decided...why not pop it off with just a bit of gas down the neck of the carb and let it run out.

I will admit it took me about 4 or 5 times to get the dizzy in the right spot before this video. I thought my timing was off, but I was the one off....went the wrong direction.

the good news....its sounds VERY VERY healthy and naughty! yuummmmmyyyy!!

Welcome to life Stella.
