Got a little more done today, but have a ^&*( of a charley horse in my right leg. Makes getting up and down a bit of a pain. I had to bend a new oil feed line for the filter to eliminate touching the shield. I put a small S curve in it. I did remove the oil filter to install the shield and now I think I know why a lot of them are missing. That is a close fit! I also discovered why there is a hole in the shield, but I want some others to discover it for themselves.

Can't speak to your use for the hole, but I found it very handy to put the magnet thru when I dropped various bolts under the manifold.

LOL
Howard, point of order: Is the hole in your shield on the drivers side or the passenger side? Was your shield ever removed and reinstalled??

It has been removed and is on passenger side. If reinstalled like yours, then I think I may see something that looks like it would line up and a use for it--although if my theory is correct, AC compressor makes it almost impossible -- hole or not.

Note that friend Chris' Caribbean has A/C and the shield. The hole is on the driver's side.

There are no tabs bent over on the front shield. There are no tabs there? Perhaps a pic of a shield by itself would be more explanatory? You can see the feet that get bolted down by the two front tappet bolts.

If you look at Brian's pic and the last one I posted you can see the two anti-rattle pieces that are atapled to the shield. They cushion the shield against the front of the 2X4 manifold. Brian's seem to be made of leather while the '55 one I have seems to have rubber pieces stapled on. I used rubber to make the repro anti-rattles.
