The photos of the hogshair carpet are interesting but if you're interested in authenticity, not applicable to a 51 200; they didn't even use carpet in the front passenger compartment so I'm fairly certain the 51 series 200 did not use hogshair for the trunk floor.

It was said earlier in the thread that carpeting wasn't standard on David or Larry's cars. Both I believe are looking to "upgrade" their trunks and aren't that concerned with being authentic.

Owen, it seems I may be on the right trail here. I'm investigating the proper procedure for restoring my '48 S8 trunk.

After cleaning out all of the old rusty tools, parts, and hay, I removed what was left of a cardboard mat that was placed at the flat bottom of the trunk. I then vacuumed it out and sprayed it with Ospho. As I was pleased to discover the next day, most of what seemed like rust was the sound deadening with some brown/red primer on it and the only areas where the Ospho converted the rust was in the tire well.

My questions now are:

1) What type of coating and color should I use for the trunk?
2) That cardboard mat- I have enough left of it to make a pattern and duplicate it. What material would be correct for that?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! I can also contribute a pattern of the mat if anyone needs it. Let me know!

Joey, I'm so glad to hear that you want to restore your trunk to the original, authentic condition and not make some "upgrade" to what it never was in the first place. Without doubt your best source of information about the color of the sound deadner and the nature of the cardboard mat would be someone who has an original car. There is no one with such a car that I think off off hand, but 51 200s are a common breed so someone, perhaps Ross or Joel Ray, may have the answers. I'd be interesting as well in knowing the details.

for those people lucky enough to have a Patrician, here is a ebay seller who makes reproduction trunk carpet. He also has kick panels as well.

Yes, my goal is to get it back to as close to original as possible.

I think I will start a new thread with this specific topic, or it looks like I may be able to transfer my post to a new thread. Please excuse me- I'm not as familiar with forums as I should be!

Glad to hear it. Problem is, there are fewer and fewer original cars, and even fewer yet of them worth preservation "as found". And once the original details are removed, there is often no validation of what's correct except in owners or past owner's memories or occasional period photographs or views in factory literature. Given the desire of many "restorers" to make their vehicles into something it wasn't originally, you certain can't look with confidence at details on "restored" cars. It's a problem that's only going to get worse with time, for those who care about such matters. "Restored" is one of the most misused words in the hobby.

This may help narrow down which models were similar -- if someone has a decent one to check. I believe it has been mentioned the customs had some pretty decent carpet & finishes in the trunk & other models were a bit plainer. Would look that many shared a particular finish though.

I think they all had flocking for sure but possibly some color variations. Don't find any part numbers for that material -- even in the counselor article where a prewar color was mentioned. The trunk material I have samples of appears to be in the 1-2 mm length & a fairly coarse strand. Color is undetermined. There is a variation in samples I have but a brownish tone is evident in all with smatterings of gray. Just hard to say what is real and what is faded.

I have been looking at various flocking sites for an appropriate material. Rayon these days all seems to be a very fine suede like texture-- .030 length with nylon coming at .040. One place I found will custom make to your sample -- but enough of an order required you could probably flock every Packard still out there and then some.

One interesting thing from this parts list is 51-4 trunks would all appear to be finished the same -- high end car or not.
