Measurements look right, Dick.

My broken drum has a thickness of about 5/16th. Not sure how much they take off when drums are turned. Couldn't find a spec in my Motor Manual or Packard Service Manual...might check the 38-39 service book.

Is it best to turn both drums to the same diameter?

A responsible brake shop would never just remove an arbitrary amount but rather would turn in increments until just enough was removed to clean up scoring or other surface defects.

It's a good question about specifications or limits for maximum diameter; I don't think the Federally mandated specifications and limits came along until MANY years later, perhaps in the 60s? and if someone knows when that legislation became effective it would be nice to know. But there were certainly industry-suggested standards in effect going way back - somewhere I have a chart from the 30s or 40s from one of the major brake suppliers with suggested limits based on drum diameter and if I can find it I'll post it.

My guess is your drum failed from being turned beyond limits and consequent metal fatique.

A practical limit of 0.060 inches on the diameter for drums up to 12 inches is suggested by this article.

What kind of puller did you use?

Saffron, attached is the drum puller, but the initial pull, when it popped back in 1986, was before we welded studs to it. In 2009, it was easy, no real strain on it that time.

Joe, thought you may have used a rim puller but that Dog Bone puller is as good as it gets.
I pulled mine last winter when it was about 25*F. I heated the hub and left it after I put pressure on the hot hub with the Dog Bone. Came back next day and it had popped.

Been busily working away and thought I'd stop by here for a brake. Imagine my surprise to see the Flackmaster drumming up some business for Packard Info. I'm glad to be a distant part in a lump of coal turning into a diamond for Joe and Big Kev. Joe, may you do 80 in high gear overdrive, and 0 when pushing the brake pedal. Kev, may the lights stay on for many seasons to come! Merry Christmas...
