Hank,

I burst out laughing when I saw your water comments and photographs. This is really turning out good. You keep surpassing yourself with this part of the project.

What are the plans for covering the Herculiner? Are you going to insulate before pad and carpet when you put the interior back in? Or, does the Herculiner have heat and sound deflecting qualities of its own?

i don't plan on anything past the herculiner. all that was there when it was born was the same stuff basically. the car doesn't have A/C, so its gonna be hot as hell anyways.

the roof i may line it with something like Kev did.

i doubt the herculiner blocks too much heat, mostly sound, so i don't think it would be worth it on the underside of the roof.

i think all herculiner is is some type of tough ass poly infused paint product with chunks of rubber all mixed in. its the poor mans bedliner if you can't afford rihno lining. it doesn't go on super thick like the rhino. Rhino might block some heat though, but at 3-4 times the cost. 89 a gallon for herculiner...rhino you can't buy you have to pay someone to spray it in at 400-600 bucks.

i will put it in the doors and shell too, well as far as i can reach anyways.

the underside of the car will be coated in it as well. it'll make the underside look nicer and protect it from just about anything.

Hank,

That work is really good! I'll repay your copy compliment on my Panther body off and copy this procedure on my Panther (5647) when I get to that point. But that's kind of what this forum is about, isn't it?

Now, if the weather would only cooperate (today was 85F at 04:00AM -- that's not even tenable) so I could get some serious physical work accomplished.

Craig

Henry, more impressive work. Lots of progress now that we are out of the hot August and into the cooling September - 99 vs. 105.

I covered the floor of my "Other Car" with the foil backed bubble insulation from Lowe's over the DynaMat sheeting that was already there. Then I placed high quality carpet padding over the insulation blanket, and finally the carpeting. The insulation really made a difference in heat coming into the cockpit. I recommend it. Relatively inexpensive too. Now is your chance...

Enjoy the cooler September weather and keep posting us on your progress.

I sure am sorry to hear that. I'm sure you've been too busy to post on the Z3 sites too. How much boost were you running? Hope it's a simple gasket replacement, best of luck.

Sorry forgot to edit this. Did some tests looking for combustion gas in the colling system. Car passed. Checked oil, it's good.

The expansion tank blew the plug out of the bottom and spewed coolant all over. Next day there was some sluggy oil at the back of the car on the ground. So I thought... Crap blew head gasket and that is why I've been running lean and throwing o2 codes and mixture deviation codes.

Well I refilled the cooling system and fix the plug on the expansion tank. Ran the car and it must have just been the crqppy BMW plastic plug that gave up the ghost cause it ran without blowing it off again. The old plug was cracked and finally split it seems.

Might have figured out my lean issues also.... Air filter wasn't on the maf all the way and I think the maf had oil on it from the k&n filter I just put on. As the codes started when I replaced the filter. I cleaned the maf and put the filter on correctly and so far she is running tip top with no codes logged in the DME with my data logger. No rough idle or anything.

Did another cold start today and still no codes. I'm pretty sure the head gasket was just a scare, thankfully.

I'm running 10 psi at max boost rpm.

So for right now the Packard is back in business. The Eastwood clear coat paint came on Friday.

Good to know your still following along z3 buddy. I didn't post on the z3 boards, there was enough info on what might be wrong just from google searches.

Glad it wasn't too severe a hit on the wallet.

Don't remember your year but since you have (or anyone else with) a BMW, I hope yours isn't prone to a sad situation that happened here this week with a 97 3 series. A high school girl died from the heat because she was trapped in her brothers car in the school parking lot all day in 100 degree temperature.

Something apparently malfunctioned in the electronics or software controlling the locks. Police didn't say what or detail exactly the sequence but apparently were able to duplicate it by locking the car in a certain way. To be able to duplicate it, I guess that particular series BMW has no mechanical linkages. At least be aware of things that can go wrong with electronics only cars.

Long story short, her brother left and it was part of her routine to stay in the car for another hour until her classes started. She had no cell phone, couldn't get out because the inside lock releases wouldn't work and without the key in the ignition, apparently the horn doesn't activate either. No one knew she was trapped.
