still learning about my 1003,i was preparing to repaint the head and after wire brushing and sanding the rust and old paint i found several welded repairs. i plan to mag the head to see if i find any more cracks, and go from there. my question is how to tell a standard and super head apart. this is a question that Owen_Dyneto or Bruce might have an answer. i know the three heads for the parts book are different. thanks dell

The Super Eight, with larger cylinder bores, has a longer engine block and correspondingly longer cylinder head. Difference in length is perhaps (? guessing) 2 inches or so.

Though there are differences with regard to compression ratio and water outlet (35 and up 320 engines have provision for a cylinder head thermostat), heads from any 320 engine thru 1938 will bolt up and perform. Thanks for Fred Kanter for reminding me that the 1939 "320" head has different water passages.

EDIT: My BAD, I just realized you have a Super Eight not an Eight.

thanks Owen_Dyneto; the parts book lists 207822, 207646, 7 for the 33 super eight as only for the one year. i will see how long it is and then know what i need to look for. dell

I don't know what the 33-34 difference is, but for 35-6 it is as O_D says, lacking the integral water neck. It is also not uncommon for these heads to have been repaired. I just got back a 35-6 Super 8 head that required a few repairs due to water passage corrosion, but is now ready to go for anyone who needs it. (aluminum head).
