Headlight bucket help please

Just got my 1940 120 out of the paint shop & one of the headlights doesn't work now. Checked the wiring under the fender & it seems ok - suspect the problem is with the connection to the sealed beam. Here's my problem - I can't get the bucket open to check it. Have removed the screw at the bottom - my theory is that the ring should just swing up, but I'm not sure. Can't get it to budge, may be stuck with paint? Tried prying gently at the bottom, no luck. Is my theory correct & I just need to pry a little harder?? Don't want to wreck the new paint job. Thanks for any advice. Iain

G'day Iain,
to PackardInfo. Sorry, I can't offer any advice but I'm sure the more experienced and knowledgeable here will do so.

In the meantime, could you please include your '40 120 in the Packard Owner's Registry, together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it?

Iain,
for including your '40 One-Twenty 4-Door Touring Sedan in the Packard Owner's Registry.

Maybe a pic or two of the recalcitrant headlight ring might jog memories and solicit some advice.

Hi Iain, As far as I know the screw comes out of the bottom, the bottom pulls away and the top comes slightly up and off. I am sure you are right; the ring is glued with paint. Your lighting problem sounds suspiciously like a ground issue.

Welcome to Packard Info!

Jim

You may need to gently go around the ring with a razor blade to free it the paint from from it. I would not try to just pull it away until you do this at the risk of pulling loose a large section of paint.
