Perfect! I'll get that one then, found it on Ebay. It'll get me by on my starter rebuild for now; I'm pretty sure I can wait until the car is all one color before I worry about the wrong starter solenoid!

Again, thanks for all the help.

Does your starter motor have one hole or two for the mount? I am trying to visualize how that orientation connects to the terminal unless the bracket turns.

I think it has mounting hole in-line with the terminal. I'll be able to check it out tomorrow night. Will post pictures once I get everything figured out. One other quick question- starter, water pump, and other accessories are semi-gloss black, right?

A Ford from the mid 60's used basically the same solenoid. Napa can supply one pretty easily. The old fashioned unit basically differed by allowing you to unscrew the knurled cover and push a button to bump the starter. Handy when adjusting the dwell - that way you don't have to get your wife out to the garage. The new units work just fine, you just have to have an agreeable wife to adjust your points....

Not having a wife, I needed to figure another way to turn the engine so I could adjust the points. This only works on manual shift transmission equipped cars, but is a neat way to do it when working alone. I put the car into high gear, release the parking brake and move the car forward or backward, depending on how much room I have in the garage, to get the cam on the distributor at just the right position. The car does not have to be moved very far to get the cam in the right place. Also, I prefer this way as "bumping" the starter, in my opinion, is not good for it.

The "old fashioned" unit with the pushbutton under the screw cap is an Autolite type, used on Autolite starters only and fastens with 2 bolts on the sides.

Mid 60's Ford will be 12V and will not work on a 30's 6 V car

@JW- thanks for the picture! How does the solenoid terminal on the starter side attach to the body? Is there a nut on the inside of the starter can? The starter currently has a copper square head bolt coming through the starter can.

There should be a copper buss bar in varying shapes depending on the starter-solenoid combination connecting the two. Here is shown in the parts manual and is item 4.2045. If you can't find one from flackmaster or one of the other vendors, 6" x 6" sheets of alloy 101 electrical grade low oxygen hard copper is available from McMaster-Carr and other places and should be fairly easy to make something. I don't know the thickness but would guess around .093 or slightly over 1/16" for 6v. Maybe someone could throw a micrometer on one and measure if it comes to that.
