I guarantee there were two Victorias because they were owned by a Dr Hoeschbaker. One is in Turnquist's book. They were both running driving cars. However a maniac got a hold of one and that was the end of it. As happens so often with these cars.

Once I was in a warehouse perusing a beautiful original Lincoln convertible sedan by Dietrich. It was really nice save for the fact the somebody chopped the back off to change it into a different body. And that's the way it stayed.

Here's the photo of Nethercutt's 734 Speedster coupe-victoria taken at the 1999 Centennial Magnum Opus. The color choices pretty much guaranteed to provoke to comment.

Nethercutt has so many cars im betting they ran out of combinations.

I see the top insert is black. Is that correct for '30? I know its speced out for '34 to have the insert painted body color on all but dark colored cars.

I'm not sure of the details, because I heard second hand, but the way I understand it is that Harrah owned three 734s at one time: two were Victoria Coupes and the third was a chassis (or possibly a chassis with not much remains of a body... don't know what style). Out of the three cars, he "built" the famous salmon and brown boattail that was sold at Pebble Beach in 2011.

One of the Victoria Coupes remained mostly intact (the Nethercutt car), and the second Victoria Coupe was separated from its chassis, then ended up who knows where... possibly the Australian car that is rumored to exist. That chassis still exists and carries a replica boattail body on it also. Built by Kingston, I believe, and was used on several "Great American Races" during the 1980s.

No. I don't think so. The story of that car is the opposite of the car Harrah had (again, as I understand the story/lineage), in regard to "real chassis/replica body" vs "real body/replica chassis".

I don't know the particulars about the cars the Doc had. He had that stuff a way way back. Once he brought in a nice original 526 with a motor noise that I adjusted out of it. It was an education because it had 8300 miles on it.

However, you should be able to check the facts by contacting the museum librarian who will check on it for a fee. I only know Doc had the cars because I inquired to an old timer about the Victoria in Turnquist's book and was told "That's Hoeschbaker's car. He had a pair of them."

But if you really want a chase, supposedly there was a boattail on a 745 chassis in New Jersey. It was owned by a nut who had a lot of unusual stuff. I don't know his name but I did know people who knew the guy and heard about the thing from a couple of people.

That sounds like the car Packardbarry gave a link to, only it wasn't a 745 chassis, it was a 740/745 engine on a 733 chassis. I don't think you could put a Speedster on a 745 chassis... not without it looking very strange. Or, perhaps all that was transferred would have been the very back of the body, and not the cowl.
I've often wondered about a Model J Duesenberg that was sold last year. It had a Packard roadster body on it, but for some reason I thought it had a Speedster roadster look to it. That would be another chase.

To bring closure to this thread, the Speedster brought $975,000, and the car remains in the U.S. It sold to to Scott Kriens (on Forbes 400 list of top executives), who also owns a 1934 Dietrich convertible victoria from the Otis Chandler collection, as well as several other ultimate collector cars. From what I've read, he's more of a sports car guy, Aston Martin being his preference.
Does anyone know more about his southern California collection?

Supposedly this 745 boattail thing was a custom car from 1930. Maybe it was a hotrod, but if it was I don't think the few people who saw it would have been so excited.
