Differential Pinion Crush Sleeves

I had thought NOS crush sleeves were pretty much extinct, thus the advise to those changing pinion oil seals or pinion bearings to return the yoke nut to exactly the same position in which it was previously (assuming the differential was quiet to begin with) to maintain the proper bearing preload. So I was a bit surprised to find a reasonable assortment of NOS crush sleeves at the Packard National swap meet. If you need one, try Patrician Industries. Perhaps these parts weren't as hard to find as I thought.

Ring and pinion gears are run-in and lapped as a matched pair so best practice is to change both, using a matched set.

Riki - what year/model car are you working on? I've got some NOS pinion gears, and other stuff up to and including a NOS complete differential that I would love to drop in someone's mailbox...

The biggest risk is ending up with pinion whine.

I don't know the science behind why those seals leak when they sit, but it seams almost all vehicles do it.

To prevent whine, pull both axles (repack anyway) and using an inch pound beam torque wrench check the turning torque of the differential gears.

When you put it back together carefully tighten the pinion nut to produce slightly more turning torque than you started with. This requires a holding device for the pinion flange and a good sized breaker bar; and some real muscle.

The results will be guaranteed good.
