On my friend's 38 six cyl. some of the engine number characters aren't readable but, he knows what it is because it's on the car's title. THe ones that are readable match.

Can he just restamp the ones that need it? He's not changing the numbers just restamping them so they are readable.

If he can-where can he get whatever is needed to restamp the numbers?

Personally, I would not do anything to the engine number stamping that would look like it has been messed with. This may bring into question how authentic the number is and cause problems in registering for future owners. A better way would be to try and bring out the original stamping by cleaning the area and rubbing in some chalk. This may reveal enough of the stamping to verify the number. Others here may have a better way to show the stamping.

Good advice JW but he's already tried those tricks and they're still not readable.
