In September of 1999, I did 105 mph in my 56 400. My speedometer was not working at the time, but my friend Mike was behind me in a 63 Pontiac with a 421. He said he was doing 105 and I was steadily leaving him. I haven't duplicated that as I keep it below 80 mph.

Paul in Las Vegas tells the story that back in the late 1960s driving his 1956 Caribbean HT flat out from Indian Springs where he worked to his home in Las Vegas. There was nothing out there then, not even a single cop, but the road was excellent and mostly straight. The Carib would peg the speedo, but there was so much air under the front that the T-L would kick in to push the nose back down. This would occur two or thee times while approaching max speed. Exactly how fast? Who knows. He never got passed by any of his buddies driving new Oldsmobiles or Pontiacs.

I once had my 47 Supper Clipper to an indicated ,by speedometer , 80 but likely less since the speedo was off by a few mph. On rare occasions
I was able to cruise for many miles at 70 in OD without a problem.

Typical speedometer errors of that time, pretty much across the board on all makes, was about 5-7% fast. So an indicated 100 mph was in all probability about 93-95. A test of a 55 Clipper speedometer conducted by the British mag "The Motor" found:

At true 30 mph, 5% fast
At true 60 mph, 5% fast
At true 90 mph, 7% fast
Odometer, records 7% higher than true

When I was a kid in high school (1964), I would regularly drive my 53 300 Ultramatic at an indicated 100 -105. This was out in west Texas, driving to work at the grain elevator in Easter (yes, this is really the name of the village). I suspect that it was a real 95 mph, but still fast.

I had my 51 200 with the bored out 327 and overdrive up to an indicated 85 last month, and it was still climbing when I backed off. Maybe I gotten a little smarter over the last 50 years....But don't count on it.

Probably 55-60 MPH, as a 5-8 year old, riding in the back of Dad's 1947 Clipper Deluxe...
