Does anyone have good rear brake drums for a 1955 Packard 400? mine are worn out and need replacement.

Hope you find some good ones. If not there are alternatives though quite expensive. There is a process using spray metallization, not unlike the original "centrifuse" process, that can sputter-deposit a metallic layer with a coefficient of friction similar to the original cast iron. It of course then requires machining back to standard size.

I've read of this process being applied to plain steel brake drums such as were used in early years on cars with external contracting rear wheel brakes. Plain steel has a lousy coefficient of friction and this a way to enhance the braking power. I've read of this process being done in the UK and I think also in Australia; I'd expect someone here in the US does it as well. If I wanted to track down a source for such work I'd probably start with Brian Joseph (Classic & Exotic) and Steve Babinsky (Automotive Restorations).

See if Gerry in San Diego (Packards Southwest) has them. He has a lot of PostWar "heavy" parts.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had several sets of them.

Are these drums 55 only, or will 53-54 Packard rear drums work as well?

Same rear drum (351423) used all the way back to the 22nd series on some models, just check the 48-54 parts book and it will give you the full list of earlier models that used the same rear drum.

The rear brake drum part #351423 was used from 1940 to 1955 on the larger series on the 127" wb. The 1956 rear drum (127") can also be used, just have the hub removed from the worn drum, and rivet it to the 56 drum. I have this done by a shop that does truck brake work. Be sure they check concentricity between the hub and drum............
