I need a pinion seal for a 55 400. Kanter has on back order and no idea when it will be available. What brand is the axel? Any suggestions as to where I might find a seal?

Thanks,
Bernardi

CORRECTED!

The rear axle (not axel) brand is Packard. 1956 used a Dana unit.

Have you tried Max or is he out too. Max's website shows them as available for 55s. He lists both NOS and I believe the R at the end of the parts number means that item is a replacement for $20 less.http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000022e~Z5Z5Z5AAABX~P45.00~~~~S4ND0WE5E373235120470a~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000022E#

Owen - Thanks for catching my typ9o.
HH56 - Thanks for suggesting Max. He apparently has a replacement for $45.
Riki - I placed the order with Max before seeing your suggestion. Thank you - I'll try Chrysler if Max doesn't come through.

Nothing like the help available from PackardInfo!

The Stude seal xref list says the Packard 446090 seal assy crosses to a Victor 46023 but that Victor number does not come up in the SKF interchange to anything modern. The number apparently did not cross to C/R or National.

IIRC, the seal assy consists of a seal pressed into a stamped housing or cover of some sort which is then pressed into the diff. Unknown if the Victor number is just the seal or for the entire assy. Since Packard built their own axles thru 55 something proprietary would not be out of the question.

This is a pretty fancy seal. Outer piece contains felt to keep the barnacles and swarf out, then a rubber seal pressed inside that. The original inner was leather, no doubt. Given the OD & ID, a more economical solution might be had but this should hold things for the next 60 years?
