What am I missing?

1-I removed the four nuts/washers that hold the water pump/fan assembly on.

2-I removed the fan blades and loosened the packing nut(about three full turns)

3-I sprayed the entire water pump gasket area with rust buster

4-??

I still can't remove the water pump.
Is there a special tool to remove the water pump or is it frozen with rust in place?

Thanks

Not all pump mountings in 1928 and 1929 are the same, care to specify Series and model?

More PB Blaster, very gentle persuasion, and patience is all that's needed. Can we assume the shaft is free to rotate?

You need to remove the 4 bolts and back the car away from the water pump.
Just kidding.

Yes, the shaft rotates freely. I will add more PB to the mix. I think maybe a little heat may be added as well.

Also need to know how do I remove the fan belt? I do not see any tension pins to loosen/tighten the belt.

BTW--Heating did not help...

I believe your motor uses the same belt tensioning method that was used by Packard for many years; the pump body where it nests into the block is eccentric with respect to the shaft and rotating it increases and then decreases the distance between between shaft centers and thus loosens and then tensions the belt. Look for a large copper ring gasket between the pump body flange and the engine block.

OK, I have spent about 6 hours trying to remove this pump to get rebuilt. Talk about a nice tight fit... argh.

Final solution was that I needed an adjustable gear puller (free rental!!) from Advanced Auto Supply.

20 minute job! OMG

Now the pump is off to get rebuilt and installed before the new fan belt and the re-cored radiator gets reinstalled.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and guidance.

Glad to hear the news. Was rust primarily why it was so stubborn to remove? Was a copper ring gasket present?
