55 Packard Caribbean double reinforcement

Hi All,

When I was under my 55 Packard Caribbean I noticed that the chassis had been double reinforced the whole length of the car body down both sides of the vehicle with a thick bit of metal. I was wondering would this have been done by the factory for strengthening or could this have possibly been done later?

Many thanks,
Mat

Any chance the reinforcements are like this?

Thanks for that info I'll check today and post my results. The car is 1 hour away getting some work done on it, but i'm going to see the mechanic today.

Are you sure what you're seeing isn't just the standard frame reinforcement used on convertibles?

As Owen suggests it is probably the Caribbean convertible reinforcement that you are looking at. There is also a stiffening channel that is located just inside the rocker panels and for that reason the body struts do not come straight out from the frame, but drop down to accomodate the channels. The X-member is also reinforced, top and bottom, with plate steel.

It could possibly be the convertible reinforcement which would make sense. I just wasn't sure if they did reinforce the chassis that way or not

Aren't all the 51-56 convertible frames reinforced this way?

I thought the Caribbean was not assembled on the regular factory line, but in a specialty shop. Or was that just the finishing touches?

Only the 53 Caribbean was built at an outside facility. 1954, 55, and 56 were regular factory production though no doubt somewhat off-line in some respects.
