Most frame rail is in the 3-4" range. Support from below, is best, so no twisting.

Sorry Don, I misunderstood the measurement you wanted to be the width of the car frame not just the rail itself. Here are the specified 54 frame dimensions from Vol 28 #4 Service Counselor.

Knowing now that it should work, I went ahead and ordered the chassis support accessory. My concern was with the flat pads the dolly came with that I might accidentally push the car off so I think that these might give a little extra protection. The place where I bought the dollies had only one pair of the accessory chassis supports so I ordered those, then had to go to the manufacturer to order the other pair so I hope they arrive while I am there to use them!
