There are two springs.

The Assist spring is a very heavy over center type spring that mostly keeps the pedal upright. It is attached between a curved hook ended piece of linkage and a bracket on the top of the frame. Once the pedal is pushed down a small amount the top of the curved piece the spring attaches to crosses over a pivot point thus the name "over center" and the strong spring comes into action to help pull the pedal down and lessen the force needed to release the clutch.

The return spring is a long thin spring that is attached to the fork and a bracket on the side of the frame near the steering box. It helps the pedal return but also keeps the fork and throwout bearing in tight contact with the linkage and also retracted away from the pressure plate unless you are pushing the clutch pedal.

Those are group numbers that encompass many years and models so you'll have to look it up in the parts book for the part number specific for your car.

The part number for the pedal retracting spring is 377782
The bracket does not list my model number but it list 418936 for 2301. That should work?

I found out the same clutch return spring shown on this diagram is broken on my '46 Packard. Someone had put some wire around it and put it to one of the brake lines coming off the master cylinder. I'm thinking this isn't the best idea....
Anyway, where is the bracket shown that it is attached to at the front located??

Viewing from above, on Clippers the spring mounting end of the bracket will be roughly in the circled area. Bracket attaches using a shared steering box bolt near the bottom edge of the frame.

Thanks Howard. I think I'm missing that, but I'll look tomorrow. John
