Ross Miller at the SpeedwelL Garage in Parkton, MD. He is really the expert in the Mid-Atlantic region. He's currently out of country, but should be back in March.

I'd not drive it much until you find out what it is.
Likely something could let loose and cause more damage. Could be something minor or something letting loose. Generally these flatties are fairly bullet proof, but why risk a more costly repair? I'm on the other side of the state, so not much help. If more of a tick than a knock, pull the side valve cover plate and see if you can see if everything is working. A big job looking in bottom end, without removing and these are monsters to pull, due to their weight and length. Check and see if there's anyone listed in the PAC in your area who might help or run an ad there, too. If mechanically challenged, any experienced local mechanic should be able to do a visual inspection and be familiar with the noise it's making. But I'd get a second look before surgery $$.
