Has anyone changed the shifter shaft seal on an Ultramatic in the car? It's tight!

Good to know! I just didn't want to wreck it and wish I hadn't tried to change it!

Make sure about the condition of the shaft. If dirt collected around the old seal or something was gouged in removing the lever or another seal at some past maintenance it could have roughened up the sealing surface and the new seal might have issues if the lip lands in the same spot.

I think part of the problem may be that somebody painted the transmission at some point, seals and all. Sitting for a few years/decades probably didn't help either.

But I'll clean it up and check, as much as possible, for any imperfections on the shaft.

I agree with Howard; I would highly suggest cleaning the relevant area of the shaft thoroughly with solvent, and inspecting for a "ring" where the old seal may have caught debris and ground it into the shaft. Fortunately, if the damage is somewhat light it is often effective to mount the part in a lathe and wet-sand with, say, 1000-grit sandpaper to even out the groove, and I would use like 3000 as a finishing pass. The irregular surface of a groove will cause more leakiness overall than the marginally smaller diameter of a corrected shaft.

'55 400. Needs aesthetic parts put back on, and electrical system sorted.
'55 Clipper Deluxe. Engine is stuck-ish.

Fixing transmission leaks today, which includes replacing the throttle shaft seal and the shifter shaft seal. Done the throttle one and went well, and shaft is in good shape.

I see that one of the band adjusters also appears to be leaking. How do these seal? My transmission has been working fine, so I'm a little reluctant to even touch this. But, maybe I can back off the lock nut, clean it up, put bit of permatex 2 behind it which would press in when I tighten the lock nut.

Thoughts?
