V8 Lifters

I remember someone asking about V8 lifters a while back but can't find the post.

Randy Berger had a bunch of NOS TRW VL58 lifters mixed in with his V8 engine stuff. Offhand they look like a pretty close match.

Apparently those were used in 1965 – 1977 AMC, Jeep & IHC models with 196, 199, 232, 258, 290, 304, 327, 343, 360, 390 & 401 engines. So obviously there's plenty of new stock out there on RockAuto for like $5 a lifter.

Anyone have a better source? FWIW when I took apart my 320 engine I found that 15 out of 16 (yes, really) lifters had been replaced. It was obvious since the new ones did not come in as many component pieces as the original, but other than that they seemed identical.

I looked at a number of V8 lifter options, shown below. While the lifter height may differ, the distance from the bottom of the lifter to the bottom of the pushrod cup at the limited highest position is the same.

Also check the dimensions of the cup that receives the push rod end. As I recall, the correct replacement lifter is the Sealed Power (Fed. Mogul) HT-879.
