Short answer, enough length to insure that the full depth of the retaining nut is engaged with threads on the stud, plus a few extra threads for a pleasant appearance.

I don't know if there is a value given but for what it's worth, the parts books lists 29 of part #303154 as the stud used in 120 thru 17th series engines which should cover the regular six and 282 eight engines of that era. The utility sections lists that part # being a 3 1/4 long stud with 7/16-20 threads on each end. All the illustrations and photos only show a thread or so exposed and the few studs which had something mounted under the nut such as the coil support were all but flush with the nut..
![]() Studs of that era had cut threads on each end. In mid 47 they went to a different type stud which had the same cut threads on the top end but rolled threads on the bottom end which threads into the block. This was done to reduce water leaks around the stud but the studs were almost identical in looks. The new studs were not compatible with the older studs as the rolled thread end will not go into the cut threads of the block more than a few turns without binding. Continued trying can possibly break the stud or destroy the block side cut threads. If you have replaced any studs and are now having the issue of not being threaded into the block deep enough so that you have a lot of extra at the top make sure the studs were not the new variety. ![]()

I agree with the above but measure the thickness of the air cleaner bracket, coil and Horn bracket on later cars and where they go and add that length to those particular studs. J.
