Now it's my turn for the confessionnal Mat. I didn't clean the '41 before the run either. The combination of the recent dust storm, even though it was in the garage, combined with the rain left it in a very sad state.

Packard34. Since it's a delco starter then the winding noise is most likely due to a BAD SPRAG clutch on the starter gear (bendix) . The bendix will either have to be replaced or rebuilt.
