I'd bet the farm that the sector or flange that contains the teeth was forged intergral with the rest of the unit prior to machining, and that 1 tooth has either broken off or been damaged and ground off.

Not really looking for a particular answer, just the right one I really don't feel like having my 3 ton car lose steering and run over a Prius. Pretty sure my car would be repairable, but the occupants of both cars would probably be dead...

I am going to use the current shaft for now, with the understanding that once the car is done I won't actually drive it on the street. The shaft should be easy-ish to replace on a completed car. This way I can trailer the car easily to Saledo and other meets and drive it slowly around my drive.

Which brings me to this question: anybody have an extra sector worm gear and shaft for a 7th-9th series car? According to the parts book, all cars from these series used the same shaft.

Tom, I understand you not wanting to delay getting the car finished. Maybe your request for a sector worm gear and shaft will result in someone finding one now, and you can proceed on schedule with the good stuff. I admire the detail work you are doing on the 730 - down to the component level.

I registered for the CCCA Grand Classic in Waxahachie yesterday. Contrary to instructions in the registration form, room reservations are being handled by the event organizers. I have written a letter to Steve Chapman to clarify this.

Thanks for the encouragement. Another reason I want something for steering is so I can get the chassis easily onto a flat bed for hauling to Colvin for mounting the engine and transmission. That will be an exciting day!

An un-twisted 9-tooth shaft is on its way, along with a straight pitman arm. Good thing I checked twice. The 11-tooth shaft was a little bigger and I don't think would have worked for you.
