Ones I've seen have a hole something like this on the threaded shaft end but in various places.https://packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=34089#forumpost34089 It may be very small and appear to be filled with something. That is a felt wick.

Nothing like that I noticed on mine. Maybe it goes in the center hole where the speedo cable hooks up?

as described for the 56, it is just below the upper screw that is just above the cable fitting. not visible in this photo because panel is tipped up... hole has a tiny brass "funnel" in it.

One more question about rebuilds and replacement speedometers, is the odometer preserved from the old unit, if replaced? I don't want to loose the actual mileage reading from the original.

Thanks Fred for your description. For future reference, here are pics of the oil fill hole I have on my '51. It is covered by the screw head. Is that all that protects the hole or am I missing a part?

Nothing is there to"protect' the hole, there's nothing to protect it from. Perhaps just unfortunate location of screw. Reason for wick is to be a reservoir of oil, also makes it easier to thit the mark when oiling blind. With a 3 in 1 can and the tiny spout you can slobber some oil up there and some will hit the wick. Use a mirror if needed, I just feel it and squeeze. Wipe excess with a rag. Best thing is it needs oiling regularly, about once every 60 years or so
