What strikes me as odd is that that the shaft had to be drilled at all!!!! It should have come already drilled. What am i missing here????

Keith,

The oil pump kit for my 282 rebuild also required the shaft to be drilled. I think it's to do with putting a new shaft and gears in an old housing so measurements need to be made to ensure the hole is drilled in the correct spot for the proper clearances.

ok. Page 31 of the service manual covers drilling the shaft when a new shaft is installed.

Also note that apparently there is a punch mark on the CAM interface gear that has to be positioned in a particular way when pump is installed to engine.

Quite possibly the punch mark on the oil pump idler gear (pic in post 1 above) is there as an external reference mark for the cam interface gear mark during assembly of the pump to the engine.
