Be very careful when buying 54 Clipper Super parts. Many 54 Clipper Special and Deluxe parts were new that year, but lots many of the Super parts were a carry over from the 53 year. Brakes, dash cluster, and other parts fall into this category.

Even the 1947 Super Clipper LWB cross shaft looks similar if not identical.

Indeed, thats why I need measurements to confirm....but this guy needs the part, so lets get it ID'd....and...new thought...is the cross shaft roller serviceable, would likely make this whole problem a lot easier to solve...

David, your cross shaft doesn't have such a conically tapering tubular or solid cross-section.

I wouldn't hold out much hope identifying shafts by look and tape measurement unless there is a huge difference somewhere else. There are 5 cross shafts listed for 54 alone yet the complete boxes all interchange.

With the very subtle ratio change between the two conventional steering boxes used on 54 clippers, there will be some difference in gear fit. A shaft for the box having a ratio of 20.4 may fit in the box with 20.03 without any sign of problem. It might even go in the PS box with 18.6 but there would obviously be some gear mismatch somewhere. Unless one has a notch or a bump or some big visual difference, then anything else could only be measured with specs and precision tools.

Just look at all the trouble a tiny bit of wear on the proper shaft is causing. Imagine what would happen if two incompatible shafts or gear mesh were together.
