I know, I know -
But for the life of me I couldn't remember how to spell Cormorant!!!! 15 lashes with a broken, wet, frayed fan belt.
My apologies to your Grandfather and mine.

O no not the old pelican/cormorant controversy!

Isn't the official name of the bird on the Packard coat of arms "a pelican in his piety"?

I don't think it's that much of a controversy. Packard has used both bird descriptions (pelican/cormorant) in print, so either one should be OK. Personally, I've never seen a pelican that looks anything like the hood ornaments but whatever floats your boat. I have cormorants on my hoods...

Just don't call it a SWAN!

I thought it was a swan when I was very young. It is graceful and sleek, not like a dirty black cormorant and doesn't have droopy jowls like a pelican. Ask any ordinary citizen what the hood ornament resembles and they will respond SWAN every time. If it looks like a swan and walks like a swan...
I think cormorant is an affectation some ad-man concocted years ago. Pelican maybe - swan yes!

i always called it a swan when i was growing up and my Grandfather would get all tiffy about it, but i could just never remember cormorant, so the next time i came over i would say swan. LOL!

i don't really care what it is called, just a funny story about my Grandfather and growing up is all.

Randy, risk a pelican/cormorant/swan poll to clarify it once and for all.

I would do that Gerd, but I couldn't stand the slings and arrows.
