How do I remove the ignition switch from the dash on a 55 Packard?

The switch is held in by pins on the switch engaging in some hooks or ears on the bezel. A spring keeps pressure between the two.

When removing the switch be careful to not force anything and disconnect the battery to prevent any surprises.

Hold the bezel with one hand and with the other hand reach under the dash to push the switch toward the bezel against the spring. Once the switch is pushed in a small amount, rotate it slightly in the direction toward the glovebox. Pins should pass over the hooks and line up with a slot so the switch can be pulled back and clear.

Here is a couple of photos showing the bezel and how switch looks from behind the dash. Examine your bezel carefully. Typically the ears or hooks can get bent from use and the continued spring pressure and sometimes break off completely.

Is the removal covered in the service manual?

Not that I remember seeing -- or if it is, not where I consider to be a logical place.

They touch on headlight switch removal using the special tool and I guess by extension, suppose they assume the mechanic would know that is how the other switches removed.

They probably felt the mechanics were familiar with the older ign switches and would figure this one out.

For everyone's information: Howard (HH56) has a very nice kit which allows the use of a bezel with a broken ear. It also comes with a well illustrated and step-by-step instruction sheet. I can recommend this kit because I have used it on my 55 Pat.
