Nonadhesive Vinyl Tape

I am looking for some nonadhesive vinyl electrical tape to repair wrap the engine compartment wiring harness on my '55 Clipper. Like the original tape used to wrap the wiring looms on these cars. Regular, adhesive backed, vinyl tape is too stiff when used in long lengths. This original type of tape was talked about in a posting on one of KevinAZ's threads. I have been looking, but can't find it. Thanks in advance.

Are you taking about "friction" tape?

Chrysler's supplier was still using black cotton friction tape to wrap some parts of the vehicle harness in the 1980s, but I suspect it was only because that stuff was cheap.

Unless friction tape is required for an authentic appearance in vehicle restoration, it's probably better left for tool grips and bicycle handlebars these days. Friction tape relies solely on the adhesive for sealing properties.

The vinyl tape used to cover OE harnesses, beginning in the mid-1950s, wasn't adhesive but cohesive - sticks to itself - and thinner than conventional electrical tape.

Search for "harness wrapping tape" and you'll find the right stuff.

This is what I used Harness Tape on Ebay. It was recommended by HH56. Don't have a V8 car so I don't know what the OEM harness tape looks like. This meets current OEM standards and the vendor shipped pretty quick. Reasonable price I think. This is what it looks like on my harness.

Thanks to all who replied. I did not find it at Max Merritt nor at Eastwood, but at Rick's Camaros.
