Re: Modern transmissions??

well, the 700-R4 is the typical candidate. Tho still looking for someone to potentially rebuild my Ultramatic. My issue is that I'm planning on keeping my 400, giving it to the kids eventually etc, so i'd like to have some degree of confidence that whatever transmission goes in there might last another decade OR two......haven't had a lot of success with the ultramatic solution so far, thus, I'd hate to have to find a rebuilder 10 years from now.....

Eric, I didn't inquire about the manual xmissions, sorry.

You might consider buying the front bumper also. The bumper guards now on your car I believe were 1951 only. Good luck

Thanks Mate (smile)!!! I got in touch with Rob Trembath and he's going to keep me in the loop, and maybe I can come on the Packard KI run as the Studebaker is a S-P product, in anycase apart from my new Ford Focus Turbodiesel it's all I have.

Cheers

John

Re: Are 57 and 58 Packards really Packards

Both yes and no, Yes as they were built by the corporate entity created when Packard purchased the Studebaker Corporation in 1954, No in the sense the last "true" Packards ie Detroit built cars (and Canada I guess too) descendants of the Packard Motor Company founded in 1899 (hope I got the year correct) ended with the closure of the Conner Avenue plant in Detroit in June 1956 on the orders of Roy Hurley of Curtiss-Wright Corporation, who had a management agreement with S-P at the time.

To be fair, Packard sales were small in 1956, Studebaker sales were greater so it was Packard that shut. One could speculate that S-P may have kept it going had no management agreement existed. The other difficulty was the size of Studebaker's South Bend factory which could not cater for cars as wide as the Packard.

They did what they could and, had people accepted the 1957-58 cars as perhaps a stopgap until a unique Packard could once again be funded maybe we'd still have Studebakers and Packards today.

History records otherwise, Studebaker dealers and the Canadian plant in Hamilton were the ones really "shafted" as they were led to believe the closure of South Bend meant continued Automobile production, whilst the Board of Directors had already decided to stop their production and continued primarily to avoid dealer lawsuits.

It seems to me that S-P was in reality (not in name) the Packard Motor Car Company, until the closure of the Hamilton plant in 1966 and the creation of the new Studebaker-Worthington Corporation.

G'day John,
to PackardInfo. There are a fair few Aussie members on board here but I dare say that I'm the most active among them!

Sold a copy of James Ward's book The Fall of the Packard Motor Car Company at the swap meet run in conjunction with this years Packard National Rally for AU$25.00 and saw one recently on Aussie eBay for AU$50.00.

The 14th Packard National Rally in 2010 is being held on Kangaroo Island just after that years Bay to Birdwood Run which will be attended by the Packards taking part in the National Rally. See you there!

I wonder whether anyone has studied that agreement and those events, be a good book I imagine.

Those events are studied fairly well in James Ward's book The Fall of the Packard Motor Car Company. You should find a short review of the book in the Packard Bookshelf. It's a good read and a book worth having.

Hello to BigKev (we had one of those in Australia) and the rest of the forum.
I'm John Clements from Adelaide, Capital of South Australia, and whilst I don't and due to space can't own a Packard (I have a 1962 Studebaker Lark Regal 4 door sedan) I'm a member of the Aussie and American clubs and look forward to learning much about these beautiful vehicles from the knowledgeable forum members.

I see Mal from Sydney (Ozstatman) is part of the group, nice to have another Aussie on the forum.

I collect Packard ads and have around 200 ranging from 1904 to 1958 (yes, I know the company ceased making cars in 1956) but still S-P tried their best with the financial resources available, not helped by the management agreement with Roy Hurley of Curtiss-Wright which ended after they had taken "our" relatively new (and profitable) defense plant in Utica NY.

I wonder whether anyone has studied that agreement and those events, be a good book I imagine.

On with the show.

John

Mike.
with BigKev, for the Warren pic's.

I'm particularly taken by the '37 Twelve chassis with the early Pierce Arrow body. An imposing vehicle because of the large glass area and towering elevation which gives it a commanding presence.

Perhaps for those of us that have no remnants of anti-squeak left on our skirts, a Picture may be worth a thousand words. So if any of you gents can snap a picture of two of what it is supposed to look like, then I think that would be very helpful. (at least to me!)

The other benefit of Jet Coat is that it reduces exhaust manifold temps. That is why it is popular with the Motorcycle folks to keep them from cooking their legs.
