It hurts to see a mongrelized Marmon V16, probably only about 30 of these cars have survived. A marvelous engine, wet-sleeved.

Thanks for the twin SC photo, by the way. Interesting. I know of a 12 that is being prepped for twin superchargers, but I believe the Graham type are going to be used.

I recognize some of the pictures as products of his work, though I don't know of all of them. The Marmon is one that I recognize as well as some of the Packards.

I believe it is all the same body, just on different chassis.

I recall that last version of the Packard Twelve with the Auburn speedster body, seen here in ivory and tan, made the rounds of the collector car publication in the late 1980's and then the auctions. Seems if even Dutch Darrin took credit for its creation in one article, anyone else remember that?

Of the '28 533 phaeton, not sure what the customizer was trying to accomplish, other than a built-in mid-'30's style trunk. Otherwise, it hardly looks very modernized. The current bidding must be driven by that all important 'provenance'.

I sure do, and was flabbergasted when Dutch Darrin took credit for it. It only proves that if you tell a lie enough times, it becomes the truth.

I think the bidding is driven by the fact that the few people bidding on it are aware of what the reserve is. They'll go as high as the reserve then hope for a fish to make the last bite. SOLD!! If no bite, the seller can then show anyone who might be remotely interested in it that it bid up "this high," and that makes a starting point for offers.

I don't think Dutch Darrin had a grasp of all of his faculties at the time he wrote the letter claiming the boattail was his creation.

I see that Dick Saunders Creation is back on the auction block. It being advertised by Mecum as a 1936 Packard Twelve Boattail Speedster crediting Dutch Darrin as the coach builder. I remember this car when Dick owned it. The motor number for this car is 904080; I am glad to see that it still has the same motor that Dick put in this car back in the 50's. He had paired it with twin superchargers, he did love his power. Before Dick placed the Packard V-12 in this car, he had a Marmon V-16 motor with 1936 Packard chassis along with this 1929 Auburn body. He was a true pioneer when it came Packard Hotrods. Dick would be pleased to see this car today; he was very proud of it.

Guessing Dutch was on the same planet and thats why he had something to do with it. Surprised Clark Gable didnt own it at one time.
