Several car makers from the early years used special protective numbers, hidden or otherwise. The Fedco system was used by some, others had their own systems for hidden or coded numbers, yet others nothing. You seem to be placing a lot of importance to your odd theft-proof number, I hope you find others who find it interesting but IMO it's of no particular interest or value except to the miniscule few who follow such trivia.

Thanks for thinking of me with the numbers!

It's a left-over 1938 Twelve body, as are about half of the 1939 Twelves. Twelve sales in 1937 suggested a good sales year for 1938 but the 1938 mini-recession changed all that.

I am in the process of acquiring a 1938 1607-1136 (V-12 Club Sedan) which, of course, is missing its "Decalcomania" (Packard's word, not mine). So, having read several of the posts here related to the TPN and other numbers, maybe you can offer up some guidance here. Here is what I know:
Title VIN: 1136201A, TPN: 411772, ENG: A600171
Do these numbers make sense?

Dave(Owen_Dyneto) would be able to give a more definitive answer but from my viewpoint all those numbers look "good" for a '38 Twelve.

VIN: 1136201A - Body type number for a '38 Twelve Club Sedan is 1136. The 201 should be actual sequence number of the body. Can't recall the actual starting number of the sequence but Dave would know.

TPN: 411772 - Should fall within the range of TPN's for '38.

ENG: A600171 - Sits within in the range of '38 Twelve Engine Numbers of A600051 -> A600620

PS - Don't forget to include the '38 Twelve Club Sedan in the Packard Owner's Registry.

The VN from the title, 1136201A is not a correct representation of the original vehicle number. The sequential portion (that part of the VN after the 1136) commenced with 2001, not 201; and the last character would be a digit, not an alpha. So your original VN would have been 1136-20??.

Your theft-proof number is quite low, within 1000 bodies of the start of 1938 production (all models). And the Twelve motor number is very low, in fact the lowest I'm aware of. Couple that with what is apparently? a low VN for a club sedan (estimate of perhaps 70 built) and it all seems to be reasonably consistent.

Thanks all. This has been very helpful and enlightening. Is there a location anywhere else on the car or chassis that would have been stamped with a sequence or serial number? As we work on this car, it will be interesting to see what is on the back of the original door panels and under the seats to see if there were any crayon marks to indicate a body number that might help narrow down the serial number mystery. Unfortunately, even if I were to come up with the actual serial number as it should be, it might be a battle not worth fighting to get the Washington DOL to correct the titled number. So, this Packard may forever be know as 201A for title purposes. I have guessed, based on the early range you state of the known numbers, that the error on the title might have actually been a misread of -2011, -2014, or -2017 depending on how it was hand written on an old document.

Robert,

Look behind one of the kick panels. They often placed car numbers there. It may not say 20xx, but it will say XX. 14 or 17 apparently in your case.

My engine is A6000190 and my TPN is 411792 so things seem to be in the right orbit.

Mine is a 7 passenger touring sedan. 1134-20xx.
